Aechmea (Urn Plants) – Striking Bromeliads in Assorted Varieties

Aechmeas are some of the most striking bromeliads you can grow, and they come in a range of beautiful varieties. Known for their bold, architectural leaves and colourful, long-lasting flowers, they’re also called urn plants, aechmea bromeliads, bromeliad aechmeas, or silver vase plants.

Whether it’s the classic silver vase plant with silver-green striped leaves and pink flower bracts, or other aechmea plants with different colours and leaf patterns, these bromeliads make a stunning statement indoors or in frost-free gardens.

Key Features

  • Bold foliage in silver, green, or patterned forms
  • Long-lasting, colourful flower bracts that can stay for months
  • Easy-care, low-maintenance plants for indoors or outdoors in warm climates
  • Perfect for pots, plant urns, patios, or tropical gardens
  • Many varieties available for different looks and sizes

Flowering

Aechmeas are famous for their blooms. The flower bracts can be pink, red, orange or even multi-coloured, depending on the variety, often lasting several months. Small flowers emerge over time, adding even more interest. Each rosette blooms once but produces offsets, or “pups”, so you can grow your collection year after year.

Growing and Care

These plants are easy-going. Keep some fresh water in the central urn and top it up regularly, letting it overflow occasionally to flush it out. Indoors, give bright, indirect light. Outdoors, place them in a sheltered, frost-free spot with partial shade. A well-draining mix is best, whether they’re in the ground or a container.

Indoor and Outdoor Uses

Indoors, aechmea plants make a bold statement with their dramatic leaves and colourful flowers. Outdoors in warmer climates, they’re excellent for tropical or subtropical gardens, or for adding splashes of colour to shaded spots.
