Cordyline fruticosa 'Rubra' commonly called the red cabbage palm is a broad leaved cordyline with maroon coloured glossy foliage that has streaks of bright pink on new foliage. This striking cordyline makes an amazing feature plant for indoors or your garden landscape, in a pot or in the ground. The Rubra brings both colour and a tropical look to the garden and complements plants with different leaf styles and colours very well. This plant can be pruned to induce branching, which will make the plant look dense and full, and even more gorgeous! But don't throw off the pruned part, just stick a few inches of the stem upright in some soil, and it will grow into another plant!

This is a very hardy plant that you will find quite easy to take care of.

Light requirement: Part sun/part shade and Bright indirect sunlight

Water requirement: Medium

Watering frequency: When the top 5cm of the potting mix is dry to the touch.

Soil: Suitable for most types of well draining soils rich in compost. For bright colouration, feed with high potash fertilizer during spring and autumn

Skill level: Beginner

Growth rate: Slow

Suitable for containers: Yes

More info: (1) The Rubra does very well in Sydney but is sensitive to frost, so we recommend bringing them indoors during winter or growing in an area protected from strong winter winds and mulching well.
(2) If the plant becomes leggy, cut back during spring and each stem tip should sprout two new shoots with vigorous new growth that will make the plant look dense, lush, and healthy. Don't throw the stems that you cut off - just prop the base in some soil and they will grow into a new plant as well!
(3) Prune off old dying leaves from the bottom of the plant to keep the plant looking great.
