Bring lush, tropical colour to your garden or balcony with the stunning Mandevilla – a long-flowering climber loved across Australia. These vibrant plants produce trumpet-shaped blooms for months and thrive in warm, sunny conditions. Mandevilla is sometimes also known as Dipladenia, but both names refer to the same style of eye-catching, colourful plant.

Available Varieties

  • White Mandevilla – Crisp, pure white blooms with a soft golden throat. Clean, elegant and modern.
  • Red Mandevilla – Bold, deep-red flowers that add a dramatic tropical punch.
  • Pink Mandevilla – Soft to vibrant pink tones. Lush, romantic and vibrant.

Why Mandevilla Is So Popular in Australia

  • Extra-long flowering season – from spring right through autumn.
  • Thrives in warm climates – perfect for Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and coastal regions.
  • Excellent in pots – ideal for balconies, courtyards and patios.
  • Fast-growing climbing habit – perfect for trellises, fences and arches.
  • Low maintenance once established. This is an easy plant that has bright flowers for most of the year!

Mandevilla (also called Dipladenia)

Some gardeners still use the name Dipladenia for more compact or bushier forms, but in modern Australian horticulture the terms generally refer to the same group of plants. All varieties sold here perform exceptionally well in warm, sunny conditions and are fantastic for pots or climbing frames.

Which Colour Should You Choose?

  • White – Clean, bright and perfect for Hamptons or poolside planting.
  • Red – Striking and dramatic; excellent as a feature plant.
  • Pink – Soft, lush colour ideal for cottage gardens or paired with greenery.

How to Use Mandevilla in the Garden

  • Train as a climbing vine on trellises, wires or fences.
  • Grow in large decorative pots for balconies and patios.
  • Create flowering screens for privacy or outdoor rooms.
  • Use as a trailing plant in hanging baskets or over pot edges.
  • Pair with tropical plants like hibiscus, palms or cordylines.

Growth & Size Guide

Most Mandevillas grow to:

  • 1.5–3 metres high with support
  • 1–2 metres wide depending on care and climate
  • You can prune this plant to the height you need.

Plants remain smaller and denser when grown in pots or lightly pruned.

Planting & Care (Australian Conditions)

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade (at least 4 hours light daily).
  • Soil: Well-draining soil or premium potting mix.
  • Water: Keep moist during the warmer months; reduce in winter.
  • Pruning: Light trim in late winter or spring promotes fresh flowering growth.
  • Feeding: Use a liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.
  • Support: Provide a trellis or climbing frame for vining types.

Seasonal Notes

Mandevilla slows down during winter. In frost-prone areas, grow in pots so they can be moved to sheltered positions during cold nights.

How Many Plants Do I Need?

  • 1 per trellis for feature pots.
  • 1 metre apart along fences for full coverage.
  • 60–80 cm apart for fast coverage and dense flowering walls.
